GENERAL INFORMATION
- All students attending Southern Virginia University agree to live by the Code of Honor (http://svu.edu/student-life/code-of-honor).
- Visiting hours are:
- 9AM-Midnight, Monday-Thursday, Saturday & Sunday
- 9AM-1AM, Friday
- Quiet hours:
- 11pm-7am nightly.
- All Day Sundays
- All Week during Finals Week.
- Members of opposite gender are NOT allowed in bedrooms or halls, unless under special circumstances of medical needs or priesthood blessings. These cases must be approved by your RA/HRA.
- Be considerate of other students at all times. Music, language, cleanliness, and conduct should never infringe upon the rights of others, nor jeopardize another’s safety, health, contentment, or tenure at Southern Virginia University.
- All cars parked in university parking lots must be registered with the Office of Public Safety and Security.
- The University is not responsible for theft or damage to personal property of any student such as that which could occur from broken water pipes, vandalism, etc., unless the University is shown to be negligent.
DRESS CODE AND STANDARDS
- Clothing must be modest and appropriate for the occasion.
- As a general rule, clothing should cover SHOULDERS, THIGHS, CLEAVAGE, BACKS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN.
- Clothing items are inappropriate if they are the following:
- Sleeveless
- Strapless
- Backless
- Revealing
- Shows Cleavage
- Has slits above the knee
- Form fitting
- Transparent between the shoulders and knees
- Dresses, skirts and shorts must be knee-length or longer.
- Knee length has been defined as clothing meeting the middle/center of the knee cap, while you are standing.
- Athletic Clothing
- You are allowed to wear sports attire that would be worn by the athletic team playing a given sport.
- While traveling to and from the event or workout, however, you must wear warm ups or other clothing that conforms to the normal Dress and Grooming Standards.
- Shirts with the sides removed are not appropriate for any activity.
- You must wear sleeved shirts in the weight room for hygiene reasons.
- Swimwear/Sunbathing
- You should wear modest one-piece swimsuits or tankinis, and cover the midriff.
- Sunbathing in swimsuits or other similar attire on campus (lawns or adjacent areas) is not permitted.
- Hairstyles
- Hairstyles should be clean and neat
- Avoid extreme styles or colors.
- Unnatural hair colors (such as blue, pink, etc.) are not permitted.
CHECK IN
- You must CHECK IN with your RA.
- You are to remain in your assigned room.
- Room change request forms can be obtained two weeks after the start of the semester, and must be approved by your HRA.
- A room change fee of $30 may apply. A fee of $50 will be charged if it is discovered that you changed rooms without approval.
- Residence hall and house furniture must remain in its assigned room
- Personal furniture (beds, dressers, desks, etc.) is not allowed
- Pets (including fish) are not allowed
- Room inspections will be conducted at least twice a month by your RA, for cleanliness and order. Check with your RA for specific expectations for clean checks.
- All overnight guests must be reported to your RA. Your guests must comply with the honor code.
- First 2 nights free, after that $25/night for up to one week total stay.
- Parents are not allowed to stay in your room, as their presence is often disruptive to roommates and/or floormates.
- You must notify your RA if leaving for the night
- Do NOT loan your key.
- The cost to replace a lost room key is $25. Missing keys must be reported to RAs to obtain a new copy. Mailbox keys cost $15 to replace.
CHECK OUT
- You must CHECK OUT with your RA.
- All checkouts will include a thorough Clean Inspection. If you fail to clean properly, you will be required to stay and clean until approved, before checking out.
- Otherwise, you may be charged a fee.
- A fee may be charged if you stay in your room past check out dates.
- Fall Semester Check Out By FRIDAY, DECEMBER 20th at 6:00pm.
- Spring Semester Check Out By TBA
- You may not store personal items in on-campus housing during summer vacation or extended periods of absence.
- Your Housing deposits will NOT be returned if your room fails inspection.
- You may ONLY request early termination (and receive your housing deposit back) if you are withdrawing or taking a leave of absence in order to: serve a mission, marry, perform military service, for medical reasons, graduation, or you choose to live with a parent who resides in the City of Buena Vista or surrounding area.
FOR YOUR SAFETY
- Report unsafe conditions, such as broken windows, light fixtures, or wall sockets to your RA or HRA.
- Report suspicious persons or activities to your HRA or RA, or Campus Security 540-261-4911
- In case of fire or smoke, sound the alarm and clear the building.
- Fire drills will be performed each semester. Tampering with fire equipment (alarms, extinguishers, etc.) is a chargeable offense, and may result in a fine.
- The following items are prohibited (the list is thorough but NOT all-inclusive):
- Alcohol (including beer, wine, champagne, whiskey, etc.)
- Drugs (including both "traditional", and "synthetic", e.g. bath salts, synthetic marijuana, etc.)
- Illegal substances of any kind
- Coffee
- Fireworks
- Candles, incense, or anything with an open flame
- Candle “warmers”
- Halogen Lamps (lava lamps)
- Hot plates
- Pets, including fish
- Space Heaters with exposed coil (ceramic kind is okay)
- Submersible heating coils
- Tea (herbal teas with no caffeine are permissible)
- Toaster Ovens
- Rice cookers, crock pots, blenders
- Tobacco or tobacco products, including igarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, etc.
- Blunt damage weapons, such as potato launchers or brass knuckles
- Weapons
- Knives with a blade-length of 3 or more inches, flippers, butterflies, machetes, etc.
- Firearms, such as rifles, hand guns, pistols, pellet guns, BB guns, paintball guns, or air soft guns.
